Credit Report Agency
You can find your credit scores by contacting one of the three credit bureaus. Experion, Trans Union and Equifax are the credit bureaus that all creditors report information to. Credit scores can also be found by independent agencies that report the scores given by the bureaus.
Finding Your 3 Credit Scores
Finding your scores is the easy part. All you have to do is contact Experian, Trans Union or Equifax. They can be reached directly, they can be found on a group Web page for annual credit reports and they can be found through another type of agency that reports each bureau’s numbers. You can obtain your information through the Web sites or by mail. By law, no information about your credit report may be given over the phone for your safety.
The hard part is clearing up any wrong information on your report. Sometimes items are accidentally listed more than once, items that have been paid off are not marked as such and items that aren’t even yours can show up. Go over your report, line by line, once you get it. Make sure each entry is only listed once on the entire report and that each listed item is correct.
What Does the Number Mean?
Everything listed on your credit report is rolled into one three digit number. If the number is closer to the higher end of the scoring range, you will more likely qualify for new credit cards, loans, etc. You will also get their items at a reasonable interested rate because you aren’t considered a high-risk customer. If you are on the lower end of the spectrum, however, you may be denied added credit or you may be accepted at a higher interest rate because of the risk factor you pose to the company.
